Eligibility Requirements for Unemployment Insurance in Colorado

In order to be legally authorized to receive benefits, the claimant or the person seeking to receive unemployment insurance benefits must:

  1. Present documents that prove of his/her permanent and legal residency in the United States and must be over 18 years of age.
  2. Be able to provide either one of the following valid identification card:
    • valid Colorado driver’s license or a valid Colorado ID card,
    • United States military ID card or a military dependent ID card,
    • United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner card, or
    • a Native American tribal document.
    • Legal presence in the United States may also be ratified signing and returning Form UIB-1, Claim for Unemployment Insurance Benefits.

How Unemployment Insurance is calculated in the State of Colorado

The benefits that can be acquired are calculated based on the claimant’s earnings during the base periods. A year is composed of four calendar quarters and a quarter is made up of three months. The base period are the first four quarters of the last five calendar quarters in which the claimant was last employed. If the claimant earned higher in his base period, he/she might receive a higher amount if he/she waited until the next calendar quarter to file a claim. On the other hand, if there was little earning, the benefits that may be received may also be scanty if he/she waited until the next calendar quarter to file a claim. The date the file was submitted will determine the time benefits can be claimed. Another factor that is considered is the reason for unemployment. The Colorado Department of Labor can only bequeath the benefits to those who have been fired faultless.

How to File Unemployment Insurance Claim in Colorado

To begin the filing process, the claimant should have been paid at least $2,500 during his/her base period, must be actively scouting for work, should be able to work, and must instantly function in the moment work would be available. These are the initial requirements the claimant should have met. Also, the claimant must have on-hand his/her Social Security Number, a mailing address in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, or the Virgin Islands, names and mailing addresses of all past employers, name, local number and address of the claimant’s union hiring hall, if applicable, Alien Registration Number for non-U.S citizens, DD-214 Member 4 if in the military within the past two years, and SF-8 and/or SF-50 form, or copies of pay stubs or current W-2 form as proof of wages if claimant has worked for the federal government, including the post office, in the past two years. Then, the claimant’s Colorado Automatic Payment (CAP) card or select Direct Deposit must be activated. All documents needed must be reviewed and completely filled out and then returned as asked. It is the claimant’s duty to review the UI handbook, then CUBLine Online can be accessed or the CUBLine called every two weeks. For continuity of receiving benefits, the claimant must register for work; every job search must be recorded.

Again, it is the claimant’s responsibility to request for the payment of unemployment insurance benefits every two weeks with the Colorado Unemployment Benefits Line (CUBLine) which can be reached through 303-813-2800 for Denver metro area and 1-888-550-2800 for those outside Denver metro area.

The online method of accessing information is better than phone line as it avoids waiting over long periods over the phone. Plus, online access lets the claimant check current claim status and information, check benefits eligibility, check payment information and history, register for work and view work search information, review and edit profile, view balances and make payments.

The Colorado Department of Labor offers an online tracking of claims filed and accessing of other information that can be found in their website. The user only has to make a registration in the website’s MyUI portion and proceed to follow the instructions on the page.
